As a single adult supporting himself, he has often found himself in a difficult gap, earning too much to qualify for many assistance programs, yet still living paycheck to paycheck as the cost of everyday essentials continues to rise.
When unexpected expenses began to add up, including annual bills and other financial obligations, Rhamell found himself facing a challenge he had worked hard to avoid: the possibility of falling behind on rent. In January 2026, HIF expanded the Emergency Housing Fund into Alameda County, and Rhamell became the program’s first Alameda County grantee through a referral from Roots Community Health Center. The grant provided critical support at a moment when he needed it most. By helping cover his rent, the assistance lifted a significant burden and gave him the breathing room to regain control of his finances.
