After experiencing homelessness for more than five years, Kristina is proud to experience stable housing—a milestone made possible through determination, hard work, and community support. To maintain her housing, Kristina works two jobs and has remained committed to rebuilding her life. However, a series of unexpected crises recently threatened the stability she had worked so hard to achieve.
Her brother suffered a brain bleed and was placed on life support in Las Vegas. Traveling to be with him during his final days resulted in unexpected expenses and missed work. Soon afterward, a severe infection in both feet forced her to take additional time off work, followed by a painful rib injury that further impacted her ability to earn income.
Despite these setbacks, Kristina remained determined to stay housed and continue moving forward. Through a referral from Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, Kristina was connected with HIF’s Emergency Housing Fund. The grant provided critical support at a time when she feared that the challenges she faced could undo years of hard work and progress.
“I was afraid that all my hard work was not enough. The HIF grant came through during a time of great need and helped me remain housed. It restored my faith and reminded me that there are people willing to come alongside others during difficult times. I am eternally grateful and will continue serving others as a way of passing along that gratitude.”
The assistance provided Kristina with the stability and breathing room she needed while she recovered and rebuilt. Her story is a powerful reminder that even after overcoming homelessness, unexpected hardships can place housing stability at risk.
