Leonie’s Story

For the past five years, Leonie has lovingly raised her adopted granddaughter, providing the stability and care every child deserves. But as living costs continued to rise, a series of financial setbacks—including reduced household income, increasing rent, utility bills, vehicle expenses, and delays in public assistance—left the family struggling to keep up.

At the same time, Leonie was navigating personal challenges that made it impossible to continue working while remaining committed to caring for her young granddaughter. Every month became a difficult balancing act, forcing the family to choose between paying essential bills and meeting everyday needs. Through a referral from LifeSTEPS, Leonie was connected with HIF’s Emergency Housing Fund. The grant arrived just when they needed it most.

The assistance helped Leonie keep the lights and heat on, pay for vehicle registration, put food on the table, and continue providing a safe, stable home for her granddaughter. It also allowed the family to set aside a small amount toward future rent increases, offering a measure of financial stability during an otherwise uncertain time.

“This grant came at the perfect time. It didn’t just help us financially—it reminded us that people care, that there is still good in the world, and that there’s still hope. We will be forever grateful to everyone who made this support possible.”

Today, Leonie continues to build a brighter future for her granddaughter, grateful for the opportunity to focus on what matters most—providing love, security, and a place to call home. Thanks to the generosity of HIF’s donors, their family found relief during one of life’s most difficult seasons and the hope to keep moving forward.
