After a year filled with unexpected hardship, Coralynn was determined to create a safe and stable home for herself and her three young children.
The challenges began when Coralynn lost her job and soon after made the difficult decision to leave an emotionally and financially abusive relationship. With three children under the age of six, the family found themselves without a home and living out of their car. Eventually, they were able to secure a place in a shelter where Coralynn spent more than six months working tirelessly to rebuild their lives.
Finding permanent housing proved to be another significant challenge. Coralynn struggled to find an apartment that would accept her income—she was either earning too little or too much to qualify for housing assistance programs. Through Catholic Charities, she was eventually connected with a housing opportunity that could accommodate her income and provide a home for her family. The shelter also allowed the family to remain there until the apartment was ready, giving Coralynn time to catch up on bills that had accumulated after losing her job.
When she finally received the call that her apartment was ready, Coralynn still faced one final hurdle: coming up with the first month’s rent and security deposit.
With the help of her housing coordinator, Jason Wong of Pacific Clinics, Coralynn was connected to HIF’s Emergency Housing Fund. After submitting her application and required documentation, assistance was approved within a week.
The EHF grant provided the final piece Coralynn needed to secure the apartment and officially move her family into a home of their own. Today, Coralynn and her three children are no longer homeless. After a year of difficult decisions, uncertainty, and perseverance, they finally have a place to call home.
