In 2025-2026, HIF and Corporate Champion ESSEX Property Trust completed another renovation project at Maitri

At the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026, With the generous support of Corporate Champion, ESSEX Property Trust, lead GC IBI Construction Inc., and a multitude of vendors, we were able to complete another renovation project at Maitri! This project included a full renovation of two of their transitional housing units.

Maitri is a free, confidential, nonprofit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area that helps families and individuals from South Asia facing domestic violence, emotional abuse, cultural alienation, or family conflict.

A day of service occurred on 1/14/25 and 8 of ESSEX’s volunteers came together for a day of prep, priming and painting the downstairs of two units!

Before the renovation, the units faced several issues. There were leaks that caused water damage, many of the kitchen cabinets were damaged, and some were missing handles or doorknobs. The flooring in certain areas was lifting and damaged, creating an uneven surface. Several appliances were malfunctioning or unsafe to use. Outside, some of the walkways were lifting, which created potential trip hazards. The units also had limited storage space and lacked a functional dining area. Food storage was limited, making it difficult to keep groceries stocked and organized. Additionally, many of the plants and grass on the property were dead or dying.
