Richard’s Story

The grant allowed Richard to break free from the financial burden of paying for a hotel each day just to have a place to stay. About a year ago, he was abruptly forced to move out of the home he had lived in for so long, leaving him unprepared both financially and emotionally. Like so many others living paycheck to paycheck, Richard suddenly found himself homeless, living in his car and staying in hotels when he could. His paychecks only covered about 20 days in a hotel each month, leaving no room to save, pay bills, or even buy groceries.

For a time, Richard managed, but a serious car accident left him without transportation, as he had no insurance to cover the damages. Life became increasingly difficult; on some nights, he rode the bus just to have shelter, getting ready in public restrooms before heading to work as a case manager at a local emergency shelter. Exhausted and sleep-deprived, his job was at risk. Finally, it was time for him—the helper—to ask for help.

Through his connection with The United Effort Organization, Richard was referred to HIF’s Emergency Housing Fund. When he reached out, he was met with kindness and resources that provided a lifeline during one of the most challenging periods of his life.
The grant from HIF had a transformative impact on Richard—lowering his stress, easing his anxiety, and helping him move out of survival mode. Emotionally, it allowed him to reconnect with friends and family and regain a sense of normalcy and hope.

With the support of the grant, Richard was able to move into a studio apartment, covering his first month’s rent and deposit. Having a safe place to call home gave him the opportunity to begin saving toward purchasing a car and rebuilding his stability. Richard never imagined he would experience homelessness, especially while working full-time and dedicating his career to helping others. Looking back, he realizes he had been barely getting by. This experience strengthened his commitment to planning for the future, practicing patience, and advocating for himself.

Little by little, Richard’s life is improving. His performance at work and in other areas has increased, and his mental health and peace of mind continue to improve. Richard knew this was his opportunity for a fresh start—and he was determined to make the most of it.

“On so many levels I send my appreciation to HIF. One person, one grant, one hand up can make all the difference in someone’s life. I have come out of a dark depression because I feel safe because I have shelter and quiet.I have a new lease on life and have motivation to tackle anything that comes my way.”
