Just weeks before welcoming her second child, Mikayla’s family faced an unexpected crisis. While eight months pregnant, she was involved in a car accident that forced her to take time away from work to recover. Although she and her baby were thankfully unharmed, the loss of income placed an enormous financial strain on the family.
Like many households, Mikayla and her husband relied on both of their paychecks to cover rent and everyday expenses. At the same time, they were faced with a $5,000 car repair bill. With only one income coming in, they had to make an impossible choice. Concerned about losing their housing just as they prepared to welcome their new baby, Mikayla turned to her property’s social worker, Andrea with LifeSTEPS, who connected the family with HIF’s Emergency Housing Fund.
The grant arrived at exactly the right time, allowing the family to secure their apartment and remain safely housed.
