On May 3, 1988, a group of apartment building owners met to discuss a way to give back to the community. The Apartment Industry Foundation for Housing Assistance (AIF) was incorporated on June 12, 1989.

In 1993, the board of directors decided to broaden the base of support and involvement within the industry, and changed the name to the Housing Industry Foundation (HIF) to include local companies and individuals, such as apartment owners, builders, Realtors, mortgage bankers, accountants, attorneys, insurance companies and other related businesses.
