HIF Provides Assistance for Santana Row Fire Victims

As we watched in horror the television coverage of the Santana Row fire, little did we know the horror being experienced just a few blocks away by the residents of the Moorpark Garden Apartments. The wind carried burning embers from Santana Row to the roof of the apartment complex, causing a secondary fire that totally destroyed the building. Twenty-two families were displaced, having lost not only their homes, but all of their personal belongings as well.

HIF responded immediately. Yes, we already have programs in place to assist fire victims and others faced with an unforeseen housing crisis. However, our partner agencies that process the applications for these funds are overwhelmed with requests, merely because of the current economy. To ask the emotionally distraught fire victims to get in line behind the hundreds of others seeking assistance was not an acceptable approach. Tri-County Apartment Association was already working with the City of San Jose Housing Department to make replacement housing and furniture available to the displaced residents. HIF helped fill the funding gap by setting aside a special fund to provide direct assistance with relocation expenses.

Each of the 22 displaced families is eligible to apply for up to $500 towards first month’s rent, security deposit or other related expenses. The applications are processed through the City of San Jose Housing Department to avoid any duplication of effort and to streamline the funding process. Residents are required to demonstrate the need for the funds and where they payment should be made. Once approved, HIF sends a check immediately to pay the expenses.

A home is a special place. It is more than a building filled with clothing and furniture. It is a place where people feel a sense of privacy, security and belonging. This is what we wish for the Santana Row fire victims, that their new housing becomes a home as quickly as possible.
